Synopsis:

All that’s required to ignite a revolution is a single spark rising.

Two hundred years after the cataclysm that annihilated fossil fuels, Sparks keep electricity flowing through their control of energy-giving Dust. The Council of Nine rebuilt civilization on the backs of Sparks, offering citizens a comfortable life in a relo-city in exchange for power, particularly over the children able to fuel the future. The strongest of the boys are taken as Wards and raised to become elite agents, the Council’s enforcers and spies. Strong girls—those who could advance the rapidly-evolving matrilineal power—don’t exist. Not according to the Council.

Lena Gracey died as a child, mourned publicly by parents desperate to keep her from the Council. She was raised in hiding until she fled the relo-city for solitary freedom in the desert. Lena lives off the grid, selling her power on the black market.

Agent Alex Reyes was honed into a calculating weapon at the Ward School to do the Council’s dirty work. But Alex lives a double life. He’s leading the next generation of agents in a secret revolution to destroy those in power from within.

The life Lena built to escape her past ends the day Alex arrives looking for a renegade Spark.

Review

I received this book for free from Xpresso Book Tours in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

I’m not sure if I understand all the finer details of this book, but I will try to explain it.This was an original take on Dystopia.

As far as I can tell, there are these nanobots called dust who can do all sorts of miraculous things, and special people called sparks have the ability to control the dust.

Lena is a very powerful spark, in fact, she is the most powerful spark anyone has ever come across. Most sparks only use the dust to fix machines, but Lena has found a way to tell the dust to do much more. She can use it as a weapon, and she can also use it to heal people.

Because strong women sparks are so rare, Lena has spent most of her twenty-four years of life hiding from those who would misuse her and her power. So instead of being used for breeding, she has been free to grow in strength and stubbornness. Lena was a very strong-willed character, and at times she came off as being abrasive and childish. However, her abrasiveness was necessary. Everyone wanted to use her and far too many people wanted to abuse her.

In her reality, most men looked at woman like her and saw nothing but an opportunity to have some good sex that would lead to her giving him a powerful child. Women really weren’t looked at as more than objects, and Lena needed to speak loudly and clearly so they would all back off.

Every man she came in contact with didn’t subscribe to these misogynistic views. All of the men she worked with had total respect for her, but she did have to lay down the law with them a few times too.

Alex was her main love interest, and while he never disrespected her, at times, he did need to be reminded just how strong and capable she was. Their relationship developed slowly over time, and liked it. They had a lot in common when it came to their shared desires and passions. They both want to create a better world where everyone is free from the tyranny of those in charge. they also share a very powerful and supercharged attraction for each other. Sparks are sort of like batteries, and because they are both very powerful sparks they ignite when they are together.

Alex does have someone who could rival him for Lena’s affections, but I don’t think he has anything to worry about. I am no fan of love triangles, but I don’t feel like there was one in this book. Jackson is a nice kid who is also a very powerful spark and unbelievably good for Lena. They play off of each other very well because he calms her down. She is all fire and impulse and he reminds her to take a step back and think before she leaps. He is perfect for her, and I have no doubt that they will never end up together. I know that was a confusing sentence, but give me a minute to explain.

Even though Jackson is perfect for her, Alex is her soul mate. She could never be happy with anyone besides Alex because they understand each other on a level that is too deep to be ignored. they both have tempers and are impulsive, but they also understand the pain that each other has gone through. Plus when you have an attraction to someone who is so strong it literally makes you glow like a light bulb, I think you need to be with that person.

The idea of dust and sparks took some time to grow on me. When I started reading it seemed like just another dystopian novel, but it actually reads more like a Fantasy novel set in a dystopian society. Sparks are nothing more than powerful magicians, and dust is their magic.

It took me a while to get into this books, but once the story got ahold of me, it never let go. I have been getting tired of Dystopian novels lately because they all seem like copies of each other, but this has renewed my interest in the genre. I think we need more Dystopian novels like this that are entertaining, have mature adult relationships that don’t revolve around sex, and have a strong message about female empowerment.

I think this is a book that will please a large group of readers, and surprise them with the originality. There is romance with a bearable love triangle, great story telling, a kick butt leading lady, and a swoon worthy leading man. It had everything I could have asked for in a dystopian novel, and a lot of things that I ask for when I read a book in any genre.

Because of  strong language, violence, and sexual situations, I would recommend this book for ages 17 and up. There are a couple of sex scenes.

Author Biography

About Kate Corcino

Kate Corcino is a reformed shy girl who found her voice (and uses it…a lot). She believes in magic, coffee, Starburst candies, genre fiction, descriptive profanity, and cackling over wine with good friends. A recovering Dr. Pepper addict, she knows the only addiction worth feeding is the one that follows the “click-whooooosh” of a new story settling into her brain.

She also believes in the transformative power of screwing up and second chances. Cheers to works-in-progress of the literary and lifelong variety!

She is currently gearing up for publication of Ignition Point and Spark Rising , the first books in the Progenitor Saga, a near future dystopian adventure series with romantic elements, science, magic, and plenty of action.

  1. Great review! This sounds like a fun read and dystopia is fav genre, but it’s becoming harder to find something with originality like this one seems to have! Glad you liked it! 🙂

  2. I like a good dystopian but sometimes it can be hard to find an original one! So it looks good to know this one is able to offer me something new. I also love when books use advanced technology in detail, and all the nanobots books I have read I have loved! Looking forward to this one too ^.^
